In a strong gesture of support, Japanese Defence Minister General Nakatani expressed solidarity with India over the recent Pahalgam terror attack during his meeting with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. Offering heartfelt condolences to the victims, Nakatani reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deepening bilateral defence ties amid evolving regional security dynamics. The visit marks a significant moment in the Indo-Japan partnership, underscoring shared strategic interests and growing trust between the two nations.
Shared Grief, Strengthened Resolve
General Nakatani began the bilateral meeting by extending his condolences to the families of those affected by the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir. “I want to start by giving my sincere condolences to people who have lost their lives in Pahalgam, Kashmir,” he said during the talks. Rajnath Singh, in response, expressed gratitude for Japan’s expression of solidarity and praised Nakatani’s role in advancing defence cooperation between the two countries. He noted, “I would like to thank the government of Japan for their strong expression of solidarity with India in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. I take this opportunity to compliment you for your immense contribution to deepening the Indo-Japan defence relations.”
Focus on Strategic Coordination
The meeting saw both ministers discussing key developments in the regional security landscape and exploring ways to strengthen military collaboration. This marks their second high-level dialogue within six months, the previous one having taken place at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Laos in November 2024. One of the central themes of the discussion was the proposed supply-sharing agreement, aimed at boosting operational coordination between the armed forces of both nations.
As members of the Quad grouping, India and Japan share a strategic vision for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Since 2014, when the two countries upgraded their relationship to a ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership,’ defence has emerged as a core pillar. Their cooperation has steadily expanded, with joint military exercises, technology sharing, and mutual logistical support forming the backbone of this growing alliance.
Monday’s dialogue further cements this relationship at a time when regional tensions and non-traditional threats are on the rise, with both nations showing a clear resolve to work together for collective security and peace.
