Jadavpur University, a state-run institution in Kolkata, has retracted its permission for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to celebrate Ram Navami in campus, following protests from Left-backed students’ organizations.
Initially granted permission to observe Ram Navami near Gate 3 from 11 am to 2 pm, the ABVP’s plans were thwarted by the university’s decision, as conveyed in a notice by Registrar Snehamanju Basu. The registrar cited written complaints from various student groups expressing concerns that the event might disrupt the peace and harmony on campus.
The notice further referenced a letter from the Higher Education Department highlighting the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in place for the Lok Sabha polls and emphasizing the need to safeguard the right of every individual for a peaceful and undisturbed home life.
Expressing disappointment over the university’s reversal, the ABVP accused Left-wing organizations such as the All India Students Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of pressuring the authorities to withdraw the permission.
According to an ABVP leader, the registrar had initially granted permission for the event, which was expected to be peaceful. However, the decision was abruptly reversed in response to objections raised by certain groups.
An official from the university justified the withdrawal of permission by referencing a previous incident on January 22, where senior professors were reportedly manhandled amid a confrontation between different student outfits during a program commemorating the Ram Temple consecration ceremony. Concerned about potential unrest, the university opted to revoke the permission for the Ram Navami celebrations on campus.
