S. Somanath, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), proposed the establishment of libraries in temples as a means to draw young people to places of worship. He made this suggestion while receiving an award from the Sree Udiyannoor Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
During his acceptance speech, Somanath emphasized that temples should not solely cater to the elderly but should also serve as platforms for societal transformation. He urged temple managements nationwide to focus on engaging young individuals.
Expressing his expectation for a larger youth presence at the award ceremony, Somanath suggested setting up libraries in temples to provide spaces for reading, discussions, and career development opportunities for youngsters.
Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair presented Somanath with the award at the event, which was attended by dignitaries including former Chief Secretary K Jayakumar and VK Prasanth MLA.
Somanath’s recommendation underscores efforts to modernize temple spaces and engage younger generations in cultural and educational activities.
