  • GSLV-F15 mission marks key milestone for India's space progress.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) marked a historic achievement with the successful launch of its GSLV-F15 rocket carrying the NVS-02 satellite, which took place at 6:23 AM on Tuesday from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This launch is particularly significant as it represents ISRO’s 100th rocket mission, underscoring the space agency’s continued progress and innovation in space exploration. The mission also holds a personal significance for ISRO’s newly appointed Chairman, V Narayanan, who is leading the organization through this momentous milestone.

In a statement following the successful mission, Narayanan praised the flawless execution of the launch, stating, “The satellite was precisely injected into the required Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). This mission is the 100th launch, which is a very significant milestone.” He further affirmed that all vehicle systems were functioning normally and the data received confirmed the mission’s success.

The launch of the GSLV-F15 marks a new chapter for ISRO, as it continues to build on its long history of space exploration. The first major rocket to launch from Sriharikota was the Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) on August 10, 1979. Now, nearly 46 years later, ISRO has achieved a century of successful launches, with all major rocket launches at Sriharikota being conducted by the Indian government.

This mission also marks a notable achievement in the history of India’s space program as the GSLV-F15 rocket, which had once been dubbed the “naughty boy” of ISRO due to its past struggles, successfully completed its flight. The GSLV family of rockets had experienced a challenging past, with six failures out of 16 launches, resulting in a 37% failure rate. However, the rocket has shown resilience and progress in recent years, with its latest versions achieving increasing success. The latest milestone was made possible due to ISRO’s advances in cryogenic engine technology, a field in which India had to overcome significant hurdles after being denied access to the technology by Russia under pressure from the United States.

The GSLV-F15 is the 17th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) series and the 11th flight incorporating an indigenous cryogenic stage. It is also the 8th operational flight of GSLV with an indigenous cryogenic stage and holds the distinction of being the 100th launch from India’s spaceport at Sriharikota. This launch was a major achievement not only for the rocket but also for the Indian space program as a whole, as it demonstrates ISRO’s ability to overcome challenges and continue to progress in space technology.

The NVS-02 satellite, launched aboard the GSLV-F15, is part of the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system, which is India’s own regional navigation satellite system. The system is designed to provide accurate Position, Velocity, and Timing (PVT) services to users within India and the surrounding region, extending up to about 1500 km beyond Indian borders. NavIC aims to provide two types of services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and Restricted Service (RS). The SPS offers position accuracy better than 20 meters and timing accuracy better than 40 nanoseconds within the service area.

NavIC’s development was spurred by India’s experience during the 1999 Kargil conflict, when the country was denied access to high-quality Global Positioning System (GPS) data. In response, then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee promised the development of a domestic GPS system to meet India’s strategic needs. NavIC has been integral to India’s defense and strategic sectors, providing a reliable and independent navigation system.

Now, with the successful completion of its 100th rocket launch, ISRO is celebrating its legacy while looking ahead to future successes. The agency is hopeful that the earlier challenges faced with the navigation satellites and the GSLV rocket are behind them. This achievement is seen as a stepping stone toward even greater accomplishments, as ISRO aims to continue contributing to India’s global stature in space exploration.

As India’s space program continues to evolve and expand, this launch also highlights the growing potential of the country’s space industry. With increasing success in launching satellites, advancing rocket technology, and developing independent navigation systems, ISRO is positioning itself to play a leading role in the global space community. Looking ahead, the space agency is poised for even more ambitious missions and further technological innovations, with the hope of achieving even greater milestones in the future.
