Five Israeli men, accused of the gang rape of a 20-year-old British woman, have been acquitted of all charges by a Cyprus court. The verdict, delivered on Monday, cleared the defendants of multiple serious allegations, including rape, sexual abuse, and abduction. The case, which began in October 2023, has raised questions about the credibility of the woman’s testimony and the overall handling of the trial.
The five men, aged between 19 and 20, were accused by the British woman of being involved in the assault, which allegedly took place in September 2023. They all denied the charges, and after months of legal proceedings, the court ruled that the woman’s account lacked consistency and credibility. Specifically, the judges highlighted contradictions in her testimony, particularly in her identification of the men involved and the sequence of events.
The court found that the woman’s claim of being dragged from a party and taken to a room was not supported by a witness, who testified seeing her go upstairs with another individual. Additionally, forensic evidence showed that the woman had consumed alcohol and narcotics (MDA and MDMA) during the time of the alleged assault, but the court determined that the level of intoxication was not sufficient to negate her ability to consent to sexual activity.
Furthermore, the woman’s statement that she screamed for help during the assault was disputed by two individuals who were in an adjacent room, claiming they heard nothing. The court also noted discrepancies in the woman’s reports, as she initially stated that three men were involved in the sexual acts, later changing her account to five.
Another critical point in the trial was the question of injuries on the woman’s body. The court could not definitively determine whether abrasions on her body were caused by non-consensual or consensual sex, which further weakened her case.
In the end, the Famagusta criminal court concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support the charges, and the Israeli men were acquitted. The trial, which included some parts held behind closed doors, has attracted significant attention due to its sensitive nature and the legal complexities involved.
