Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, sparked controversy by shredding a copy of the United Nations Charter at the General Assembly in response to a vote granting additional rights to Palestine. Gilad Erdan’s dramatic gesture, captured in a viral video, preceded a UN General Assembly vote of 143 to 9 in favor of a resolution urging the Security Council to elevate Palestine from observer to full member status.
In a scathing rebuke, Gilad Erdan accused the General Assembly of disregarding the foundational document of the UN system, stating, “You are shredding the UN charter with your own hands… Shame on you.” He vehemently opposed Palestine’s potential admission as a member, characterizing it as support for a “Palestinian terror state led by the Hitler of our time” and warning of dire consequences.
Palestine’s ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, hailed the vote as “historic” and “significant,” emphasizing the importance of the decision.
Amidst escalating tensions, Israel’s preparations for a potential large-scale invasion of the southern city of Rafah underscored the volatile situation in the region. Rafah is identified as the last stronghold of the Hamas militant group.
The ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, which erupted in October 2023, has resulted in a devastating toll, with the death toll exceeding 34,500, primarily comprising women and children, according to local health officials.
