Iran’s foreign minister on Monday accused the United States of tacitly approving Israel’s strike on its consulate building in Syria, resulting in the deaths of seven Iranian military officials, including two generals.
Hossein Amirabdollahian reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to retaliate against the attack, widely attributed to Israel. This incident marks an escalation in Israel’s targeting of Iranian military personnel, a move that has heightened tensions between the two nations and their respective allies.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah echoed support for a potential military response from Tehran, emphasizing the backing of the Iran-backed group in light of the attack. The strike claimed the life of Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a prominent figure within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, further intensifying concerns about the conflict spreading across the Middle East.
Clashes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have escalated since the onset of the Gaza conflict six months ago. Iran’s support for militant groups involved in the conflict has further fueled hostilities.
Despite Israel’s frequent targeting of Iranian military officials and allies, Zahedi’s death represents a significant setback for Tehran, reminiscent of the killing of Quds Force chief Gen. Qassim Soleimani in Baghdad in 2020.
Addressing reporters during a visit to Damascus, Amirabdollahian condemned the US for its perceived role in the consulate strike. He asserted that the lack of condemnation from Washington and two European countries implied implicit approval for Israel’s actions.
The Biden administration denied prior knowledge of the airstrike, reiterating its close ties with Israel. Israel, however, refrained from commenting on the incident. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh acknowledged the US assessment attributing responsibility to Israel.
Initial reports from Iranian state media indicated Zahedi’s leadership role within the Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah later confirmed Zahedi’s significant contributions to the group during his various stints in Lebanon.
With tensions simmering along the Lebanon-Israel border, clashes between Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops have intensified. The recent death of elite Hezbollah commander Ali Ahmad Hussein further exacerbated the situation, underscoring the precariousness of the region’s security landscape.
Efforts by Washington and Paris to broker a ceasefire aim to prevent a full-scale conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. However, recent developments, including political tensions within Lebanon and the assassination of a Lebanese Forces official, have added complexity to the situation.
Nasrallah condemned accusations implicating Hezbollah in the kidnapping, labeling them as baseless and dangerous rhetoric, further heightening tensions within Lebanon.
