Amid rising tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s recent attack on Israel, the Israeli military chief has affirmed that the country will retaliate, awaiting a decision from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In response, Iran has threatened to deploy previously unused weapons if Israel strikes.
Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi emphasized that Israel is deliberating its next actions and asserted that Iran’s April 13 attack will not go unanswered. Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Ali Bagheri Kan, stated that Iran’s response time to any Israeli strikes would be within seconds.
The April 13 attack marked Iran’s first direct assault on Israel, purportedly in retaliation for an airstrike on Tehran’s consulate building in Damascus on April 1, which Israel was widely accused of carrying out.
Prime Minister Netanyahu convened his war cabinet for the second time in less than 24 hours to determine Israel’s response to Iran’s aggression. However, no official decisions have been announced yet.
During a discussion with US official Steve Scalise, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to defend itself by any means necessary.
Israel’s military chief reiterated the country’s readiness to respond to the missile and drone attack launched by Iran, with the timing of the response to be determined by Israel.
In parallel, Iran has declared preparedness for all potential scenarios, including the deployment of previously unused weaponry in the event of Israeli strikes.
Amid international calls for restraint, the US urged Israel to exercise caution in its response, emphasizing the preference for diplomatic solutions over armed conflict.
China and Russia have also weighed in on the situation, with China expressing confidence in Iran’s ability to manage the crisis while safeguarding regional stability, and Russia advocating for restraint to prevent further escalation.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the G7 nations are working on coordinated measures against Iran in response to the drone attack on Israel.
Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have lifted some emergency measures but maintain vigilance as the situation unfolds.
