Pro-Palestinian demonstrators advocating for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza staged protests in major cities across the United States on Monday, causing disruptions to traffic and resulting in arrests. The protests coincided with heightened tensions following Iran’s recent direct attack on Israel.
In New York City, protesters marched on the Brooklyn Bridge, temporarily halting traffic as they draped Palestinian flags across their shoulders and chanted slogans. The demonstration, initially composed of about 150 individuals, grew in size, leading to arrests by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Similar protests occurred in California, Illinois, and Oregon.
The protests came one day after Iran launched a significant attack on Israel in retaliation for an April 1 airstrike in Damascus, resulting in casualties among Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Syrian civilians. The ongoing conflict has intensified international concerns and sparked demonstrations worldwide.
In San Francisco, demonstrators gathered on the Golden Gate Bridge, causing the closure of all traffic lanes. Despite warnings from authorities, protesters remained on the bridge, advocating for an end to the blockade on Gaza. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) made approximately 20 arrests, emphasizing the illegality and dangers of blocking highways for protests.
In Chicago, protesters obstructed Interstate 190, disrupting travel to O’Hare International Airport during the morning rush hour. While some travelers abandoned vehicles and walked to the airport, operations at the airport were minimally affected. Chicago Police made multiple arrests in connection with the protest.
In Washington state, a demonstration near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport led to the closure of the main road, prompting authorities to encourage the use of alternative transportation. Similarly, in Oregon, protesters on Interstate 5 in Eugene resulted in numerous arrests by state police.
The protests reflect widespread condemnation of the ongoing violence in Gaza and call for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis. As tensions continue to escalate, concerns persist over the potential for further unrest and violence in the region.
