Former India coach Ravi Shastri has voiced his support for the Impact Player rule in IPL 2024, highlighting its role in creating thrilling finishes. This comes amidst a debate sparked by Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s criticism of the rule, expressing concerns about its impact on all-rounder development.
Introduced in IPL 2023 after a trial in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, the Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a 12th player during the match, replacing one of the original XI announced at the toss.
Ravi Shastri, speaking on R Ashwin’s YouTube channel, defended the rule, citing its contribution to tighter finishes and its alignment with evolving trends in sports. He emphasized the rule’s positive impact on the IPL’s competitiveness, referencing the high scores and individual performances witnessed in recent editions.
While Rohit Sharma and others have raised concerns about the rule’s effect on all-rounders, Ravi Shastri and supporters like R Ashwin highlight its benefits, particularly in providing opportunities for young talents like Dhruv Jurel, who made his Test debut within a year of starting his IPL career as an Impact Player in 2023.
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, stated that the Impact Player rule is not permanent and its future in IPL editions will be decided after discussions with stakeholders post the T20 World Cup 2024. Jay Shah emphasized the importance of evaluating whether the rule enhances competitiveness and player opportunities before making a final decision.
