In a recent statement released on Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the eagerly awaited fitness update on several key players ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, scheduled to kick off on March 22.
The headline news is the green signal given to wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who has been declared fit for IPL 2024 after an extensive 14-month rehabilitation and recovery process. Pant’s return to the field comes after a life-threatening road accident he encountered following the Bangladesh series in December 2022.
The young talent, pivotal for both Delhi Capitals and the Indian cricket team, has been eagerly awaited by fans and cricket enthusiasts alike. With practice games under his belt, Pant is set to mark his return in Delhi Capital’s opening match against Punjab Kings at Mohali on March 23.
The confirmation of Pant’s fitness has sparked optimism among cricket aficionados, especially with an eye towards the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled for later this year in the West Indies and the USA. His potential inclusion in the Indian squad for the global event is seen as a significant boost, considering his explosive batting prowess and game-changing abilities.
However, amidst the positive news surrounding Pant’s return, BCCI’s statement also brought disappointing updates for fast bowling duo Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna. Shami, who has been sidelined since the ODI World Cup due to a persistent heel injury, underwent surgery in February, ruling him out of the IPL 2024. The absence of Shami, known for his lethal pace and wicket-taking abilities, is a significant setback for his IPL franchise and the Indian cricket team.
Similarly, Prasidh Krishna, who sustained a quadriceps injury during a Ranji Trophy match, underwent surgery for his left proximal quadriceps tendon. The promising fast bowler, who has shown immense potential in domestic and international cricket, will also miss the IPL 2024 season.
The BCCI assured that both Shami and Prasidh are under the close observation of the medical team and are undergoing rehabilitation. However, their unavailability for the upcoming tournament will undoubtedly impact their respective franchises and the broader cricketing landscape.
