Former Australian pace bowler Brett Lee has raised concerns about KL Rahul’s performance as captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Brett Lee criticized KL Rahul’s intent, highlighting his poor strike rate while opening the batting, which, according to him, is adding pressure on other batters in the team.
Despite being among the top five run-scorers in IPL 2024, KL Rahul has faced criticism for his fluctuating strike rates in the initial matches of the tournament. Brett Lee pointed out that KL Rahul’s strike rate in the first few games ranged from 129 to 150, indicating a struggle to maintain momentum and meet expectations.
Moreover, KL Rahul’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 has added to the scrutiny. Skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar justified the decision by emphasizing the need for middle-order batting options, opting for Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as wicket-keeping choices instead.
In a recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), LSG suffered a heavy defeat by 98 runs, pushing KKR to the top of the IPL 2024 points table. Despite Rahul’s efforts, LSG failed to chase down KKR’s target of 236 runs. Rahul managed only 25 runs off 21 deliveries, contributing to LSG’s downfall as they lost 9 wickets for 67 runs in less than nine overs.
Speaking after the defeat, KL Rahul attributed the loss to the team’s poor overall performance but singled out the bowlers for criticism. KKR’s aggressive start, led by Sunil Narine and Phil Salt, who scored 70 runs in the powerplay, put LSG under immense pressure from the outset.
With KL Rahul’s form under scrutiny and LSG struggling to find their footing in the tournament, questions persist about the captain’s ability to lead the team effectively and alleviate pressure on the batting lineup.
