Indian Air Force (IAF) is poised to receive its first TEJAS MK-1A fighter aircraft by July this year, marking a crucial milestone in India’s indigenous defence capabilities. Originally slated for delivery in the February-March timeframe, a slight delay occurred due to technical reasons, defense officials informed ANI.
Project progress and future plans:
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) recently conducted the maiden flight test trials of the TEJAS fighter aircraft, and further integration trials are underway. The aircraft is expected to complete these trials in the coming weeks before being handed over to the IAF. The induction of the TEJAS MK-1A into the air force will be a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in the military sector. It is anticipated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be invited to mark the occasion.
The TEJAS MK-1A project, conceptualized under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, has already seen substantial orders placed. An order worth ₹48,000 crore for 83 planes has been finalized, with another expected order worth ₹65,000 crore for 97 planes by the end of the financial year.
Indigenization efforts and business opportunities:
The Defense Ministry has issued a tender to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the purchase of 97 TEJAS MK-1A fighter jets, marking the largest order for indigenous military hardware in India’s history. This program aims to replace aging aircraft in the IAF’s fleet and is backed by both the Defense Ministry and Air Headquarters.
The indigenous fighter aircraft program is not only expected to boost indigenization efforts but also provide substantial business opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the defense sector across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on reviving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has led to significant strides in indigenous defense production, with orders for various aircraft and helicopters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal involvement in promoting indigenous defense capabilities was highlighted when he undertook a sortie in the trainer variant of the TEJAS fighter, marking the first-ever such flight by an Indian Prime Minister in a combat aircraft.
The announcement of plans to acquire 97 more TEJAS MK-1A fighter jets, made by IAF Chief VR Chaudhari, underscores India’s commitment to bolstering its indigenous defense capabilities on the global stage.
