Indian shooter Palak Gulia made history by clinching India’s final quota spot for pistol shooting in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Her remarkable achievement unfolded during the ISSF Final Olympic Qualification Championship, where she secured the third position in the 10m air pistol event.
Despite facing initial challenges in the 24-shot final, Gulia showcased exceptional composure and skill, steadily climbing the ranks to finish with a score of 217.6. Her performance culminated with an exit after the 22nd shot, cementing her place in the Olympic roster.
The gold medal in the event was claimed by Elmira Karapetyan of Armenia, while Thai teenager Kamonlak Saencha secured the silver medal along with the second quota spot. Notably, Karapetyan had already secured a quota spot in the 10m air pistol category, leaving the remaining finalists to compete for the two available spots.
This achievement marks India’s 20th quota in shooting for the Paris Olympics, with eight allocated to pistol shooting. In total, India has secured 16 quotas in rifle and pistol shooting, with the remaining four in shotgun events.
Palak Gulia, along with her fellow Indian shooter Sainyam, faced formidable competition, particularly from Saencha and the experienced Veronika Major from Hungary. Despite encountering setbacks early on, both Indian athletes displayed remarkable resilience under pressure. Saencha’s impressive performance, including a score of 10.9 for her 13th shot, highlighted the intense competition.
Palak Gulia’s perseverance paid off as Major’s eliminations created an opportunity for her to seize a 0.6-point lead before the 19th round, ultimately securing the bronze medal. In the qualification relay held earlier, both Gulia and Sainyam secured their Olympic spots with a commendable score of 578.
Palak Gulia’s achievement not only underscores her individual prowess but also reflects the rising prominence of Indian shooting on the global stage, setting the stage for a compelling display of talent and determination at the Paris Olympics.
