US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell expressed support for India’s efforts to navigate strained relations with China, emphasizing the complexities posed by territorial disputes.
In response to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s recent remarks on prioritizing resolutions to border issues with China, Kurt Campbell underscored the importance of reducing tensions between the two nations. He acknowledged the challenges but affirmed US encouragement for dialogue aimed at easing bilateral strains.
“I think anytime two countries can find common ground to reduce tensions, we have to support that,” Kurt Campbell stated during an address at a Washington think tank.
Kurt Campbell, a key figure in US efforts to strengthen ties with India as a counterbalance to China’s expanding influence, expressed confidence in the robust US-India bilateral relationship. He highlighted upcoming diplomatic engagements in India with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to further enhance coordination between the two countries.
However, Kurt Campbell also pointed out enduring “structural issues” in Sino-Indian relations, particularly regarding territorial disputes along their 3,800 km border. He noted challenges in achieving substantial improvements in relations due to Beijing’s reluctance to compromise on territorial matters under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.
The US official’s comments reflect ongoing US support for India amid persisting geopolitical tensions and underscore Washington’s strategic alignment with New Delhi despite occasional differences, including on issues of human rights.
The India-China border disputes date back to a war in 1962 and have recently escalated with military standoffs, including deadly clashes in 2020. Both countries, possessing nuclear capabilities, continue to grapple with unresolved territorial claims along their shared border.
Washington’s proactive engagement with India remains pivotal in its broader strategy to balance China’s influence in the region, signaling a continued US commitment to fostering stability and cooperation among Indo-Pacific nations.
