Indian Railways has announced a fresh incentive aimed at encouraging digital ticketing, offering a three percent discount on unreserved general tickets booked through its official railone app, a move designed to reduce queues at stations and promote cashless travel across the rail network.

This facility will be available for a six-month period, beginning January 14, 2026, and continuing until July 14, 2026. The announcement reflects the railway ministry’s broader objective of easing congestion at ticket counters while making train travel more convenient for millions of daily commuters.
To implement the scheme, the railways issued instructions on December 30 to the Centre for Railway Information Systems, asking for necessary software modifications. One of the most significant aspects of the new policy is that the discount will apply to payments made through any digital mode available on the app, including upi, debit cards, credit cards, and net banking. Earlier, cashback benefits were largely limited to payments made using the r-wallet, the railways’ in-house digital wallet.
Under the existing system, passengers using r-wallet on railone already receive a three percent cashback. With the new discount being added on top of this, travellers paying through r-wallet will effectively enjoy a total benefit of six percent on general ticket bookings made via the railone app. Railway officials have clarified that the original cashback structure will continue unchanged, ensuring that frequent digital users gain maximum advantage during the offer period.
Importantly, the railways have made it clear that this discount will be exclusive to the railone app. Passengers booking unreserved tickets through any other platform, website, or application will not be eligible for the three percent fare reduction. Officials said this exclusivity is intentional and aims to consolidate passenger traffic onto the railways’ official digital platform, streamlining services and lowering the operational burden at physical ticket counters, especially in suburban and high-density routes.
The initiative also aligns with changing passenger behaviour. With increasing smartphone penetration and widespread adoption of digital payments, more travellers are choosing app-based ticketing over cash purchases. By offering a tangible financial incentive, the railways hope to accelerate this shift and normalise app-based bookings even for short-distance and unreserved travel, which traditionally relied heavily on physical counters.

Before the launch of railone, reserved ticket booking was primarily handled through the IRCTC Rail Connect, while live train tracking required the ntes app, complaints were lodged via rail madad, and food orders were placed through separate platforms. This fragmentation often caused inconvenience due to repeated logins, varied interfaces, and increased storage use on mobile devices. Railone was developed to simplify this ecosystem by bringing all key services under one digital roof.
A key component of the railone experience is the r-wallet, Indian Railways’ own digital wallet. R-wallet allows passengers to store funds securely and use them for ticket purchases and other railway services. Access to the wallet is protected through biometric verification or mPIN, ensuring both convenience and security. For unreserved ticket bookings, r-wallet has already been offering a three percent cashback, which will now stack with the new digital payment discount during the promotional period.
Registration for railone is designed to be straightforward. After downloading the app from the google play store or apple app store, users register using their mobile number and complete otp verification. They then set up an mPIN or enable biometric login, after which all services become accessible. The app also supports multiple indian languages, making it easier for passengers from different regions to navigate and use the platform comfortably.
Beyond ticketing, railone provides real-time notifications for pnr status, train delays, booking confirmations, and complaint updates. It also includes a built-in refund management feature, allowing passengers to cancel tickets and track refunds directly through the app. This transparency reduces the need for physical follow-ups at stations and enhances trust in digital transactions.
Railway officials say the cashback and discount initiative is not just about cost savings for passengers but also about long-term system efficiency. Reduced queues at stations mean smoother operations, better crowd management, and improved passenger experience, particularly during peak travel hours.
