  • Meghalaya aims to become India's sports and football hub.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is determined to make his state a major player in the sports arena, with football leading the charge. His vision is to develop a sports ecosystem in the state, focusing on creating a strong sports economy that nurtures young talent, produces national and international medal winners, and elevates Meghalaya on the global sports map. Through investments in sports infrastructure and grassroots programs, Conrad Sangma aims to create a sustainable sports culture while ensuring job opportunities for the youth.

Building a Sports Economy

In an effort to reshape Meghalaya into a sports powerhouse, CM Conrad Sangma highlighted the importance of not only winning medals but also making sports an integral part of the culture for the state’s youth. He emphasized the importance of physical fitness, character building, discipline, and sportsmanship. The Chief Minister underscored the need for a youth-oriented approach, ensuring that sports become a crucial element in the personal development of the younger generation.

Since the introduction of a sports policy in 2019-20, the state has significantly ramped up its efforts in developing sports infrastructure. Over 200 new sports facilities have been established at the grassroots and elite levels, with a special focus on areas like football. The state has also invested heavily in stadiums, sports complexes, and facilities across various levels, from district to state levels, to provide equal opportunities to rural youth. Notably, the Mawkhanu Sports Complex is set to become the largest football stadium in the Northeast, with a capacity of 40,000.

Focus on Football and Infrastructure Development

The government’s strategy includes not just upgrading existing infrastructure but also introducing high-profile events like the Durand Cup and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, which have already been hosted in Meghalaya. Looking ahead, the state will host the National Games in 2027. The state government has also committed to developing football with the construction of 50 AstroTurf football fields by 2028 and establishing over 100 football training grounds to ensure grassroots development.

A major initiative, the Chief Minister’s Football Mission (CMFM), targets the involvement of 25,000 children in football across 250 grassroots centers by 2029. Furthermore, the state has seen over 4,000 athletes and coaches benefiting from financial schemes, and a significant number of athletes have received scholarships. The investment in sports infrastructure is expected to lead to the creation of thousands of jobs, ranging from coaches to administrative roles.
