In a groundbreaking development, pilot Gopichand Thotakura is poised to become the first Indian to embark on a space tourism journey. Selected as a member of the elite crew for Blue Origin’s New Shephard-25 (NS-25) mission, Thotakura will join five other candidates on a voyage beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Thotakura, an entrepreneur and skilled pilot, joins a select group of 31 individuals who have ventured beyond the Karman line, marking the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
With a lifelong passion for flight, Thotakura defied norms by learning to pilot aircraft before mastering driving. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Described by Blue Origin as an accomplished aviator, Thotakura has piloted various aircraft types, including bush planes, aerobatic planes, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons. He has also served as an international medical jet pilot.
Hailing from Vijayawada, the 30-year-old currently heads Preserve Life Corp, a global center for holistic wellness and applied health based near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Each NS-25 mission member will carry a postcard on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future, symbolizing the aspirations of young minds worldwide.
From an environmental perspective, the NS-25 mission emphasizes sustainability in space exploration, with Blue Origin highlighting that nearly 99% of New Shepard’s dry mass is reused, and its engine is fueled by highly efficient liquid oxygen and hydrogen, emitting only water vapor during flight.
The launch date for the NS-25 mission is pending announcement. Notably, the mission includes former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, the first Black astronaut candidate selected by US President John F. Kennedy in 1961, who will finally realize his spaceflight opportunity.
Blue Origin, led by CEO Jeff Bezos, has conducted six crewed flights since July 2021 and is also developing the New Glenn heavy rocket for commercial purposes, with its maiden flight scheduled for next year.
