India’s badminton contingent, spearheaded by PV Sindhu, has clinched five quota places for the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking a significant achievement for the nation’s shuttlers. According to the Race to Paris Ranking List unveiled by the BWF, India is set to field one of its largest badminton teams, comprising seven players, for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
Former world champion PV Sindhu, renowned for her Olympic prowess with a silver in Rio 2016 and a bronze in Tokyo 2020, secured India’s first quota by finishing 12th on the Race to Paris Ranking List.
Joining PV Sindhu in the quest for Olympic glory are HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, both esteemed world championships medalists. HS Prannoy claimed the ninth spot on the list, while Lakshya Sen secured the 13th position, solidifying their presence in the men’s singles category.
Additionally, India clinched two quota places in the doubles events, with Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy securing the third spot in men’s doubles, and Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto finishing 13th in women’s doubles.
Chirag-Satwik’s historic achievement of becoming the first Indian doubles pair to reach the world No. 1 spot, along with Ponappa-Crasto’s impressive performances, contributed significantly to India’s qualification in the doubles events.
With seven badminton quotas secured, India is poised to present a formidable squad at the Paris Olympics, matching the team size from the Rio 2016 Games. The nation’s hopes ride high on the shoulders of veterans like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, who have previously brought Olympic glory to Indian badminton.
The final confirmation of the quota places by the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) is expected by May 24, determining the official representation of athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics. India’s achievement in securing five quota places reflects the nation’s growing prowess and commitment to excelling on the global badminton stage.
