India has heightened its security apparatus along the eastern border in response to growing threats of cross-border extremist infiltration from Bangladesh. The move comes in the wake of credible intelligence inputs, raising alarms about resurging radical activities, suspected Pakistani involvement, and rising instability in the neighboring country.

Intelligence Sparks Security Overhaul

Senior officials from India’s central intelligence and security agencies convened a high-level meeting earlier in May to discuss new threats emerging from across the Bangladesh border. The focus was on the banned terror group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), which recently held a large public rally in Dhaka. The rally, held on May 10, expressed support for Hamas in the ongoing Gaza conflict and prominently displayed JMB flags—an incident that has deeply concerned Indian authorities.

Investigations in West Bengal have intensified after the local police arrested three individuals linked to JMB. Preliminary findings suggest they were acting under instructions from handlers in Pakistan, underlining a cross-border dimension to the threat. With the possibility of radical elements trying to slip into India, especially through porous areas in West Bengal, the threat perception has elevated significantly.

Multi-Layered Response Across Sectors

The Border Security Force (BSF) has launched a redeployment initiative to plug infiltration-prone gaps along the Bangladesh border, especially in West Bengal. Surveillance has been increased across air and sea routes as well. Airports handling flights from Bangladesh have tightened checks, with advisories issued for thorough passenger screening.

The government has also restricted imports through two key Indian ports handling Bangladeshi cargo. According to a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), items like sugar and other essentials will now face trade restrictions. Though the official reasoning relates to trade balance and customs monitoring, the timing reflects a broader security recalibration.

Security officials have emphasized that the heightened measures are precautionary but rooted in solid intelligence about potential radical movement. These developments indicate New Delhi’s firm resolve to secure its eastern flank while maintaining a close watch on evolving security dynamics in Bangladesh.
