  • Delhi prepares hospitals for rising Covid-19 cases.
  • Essential medical equipment and beds must be ready immediately.

The Delhi government has issued a new advisory to hospitals and health centers, urging them to enhance their Covid-19 readiness in response to a modest but noticeable increase in Covid cases within the city. With 23 active cases currently reported, authorities are focusing on ensuring adequate resources and infrastructure are in place to manage any potential surge, while reassuring the public that there is no cause for panic.

Hospital Preparedness and Resource Management

The health department’s advisory mandates that all hospitals maintain sufficient availability of beds, oxygen supplies, vaccines, and essential medicines. It also emphasizes the importance of keeping critical equipment such as ventilators, oxygen concentrators, Bi-PAP machines, and PSA oxygen plants fully functional. This measure aims to ensure hospitals can promptly handle any increase in patient numbers and provide appropriate treatment without delay.

Genomic Surveillance and Data Monitoring

To monitor the virus’s evolution, the advisory requires that all positive Covid samples be sent to Lok Nayak Hospital for genome sequencing. This step is crucial for identifying any emerging variants and tracking their spread within the city. Additionally, health facilities are asked to regularly update the Delhi State Health Data Management Portal with case data, helping authorities maintain real-time awareness of the situation.

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh noted that as of May 22, the city has recorded approximately 23 active Covid-19 cases. Efforts are underway to determine whether these cases originated within Delhi or were brought in from outside regions. The minister also highlighted the coordination between government officials, medical superintendents, doctors, and hospital staff to ensure the city’s preparedness.

This advisory comes amid a slight nationwide increase in Covid cases, with 257 active cases reported across India as of May 19. Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi are among the states where case numbers have shown a rise. The Delhi government’s proactive approach seeks to stay ahead of this trend by maintaining robust healthcare readiness and vigilant monitoring.
