The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) has taken definitive steps towards India’s representation at the Paris Olympics 2024 by formally submitting rider Anush Agarwalla’s entry to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). This development follows a contentious legal dispute over the EFI’s selection criteria, which was recently upheld by the court despite challenges from competitor Shruti Vora.
Anush Agarwalla’s participation now hinges on the IOA’s acceptance of the EFI’s nomination, marking a crucial milestone for Indian equestrian sport. “The EFI proceeded with Anush’s entry following the court’s decision in our favor. We did not anticipate further legal opposition,” stated a member of the EFI’s Executive Council (EC).
In parallel, the EFI is preparing for its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for July 21. This meeting comes amidst reservations expressed by certain reinstated EC members regarding the agenda and financial disclosures. “The AGM notice has been posted on our website. However, not all EC members are in agreement due to concerns over pending audited accounts and agenda approval,” the council member explained.
An EFI official underscored the mandatory nature of the AGM as per the Sports Code, essential for approving the upcoming year’s budget and discussing critical operational matters. “As per Annex 2, para 3.18 of the Sports Code, an AGM is mandated annually. This meeting is overdue, having been postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The July 21 AGM will serve as EFI’s AGM for the 2023 fiscal year,” the official clarified.
Despite internal dissent within the EC, the EFI remains committed to complying with legal and regulatory obligations governing National Sports Federations (NSFs). “Our current EC faces significant internal divisions, making consensus challenging. Nevertheless, adherence to the Sports Code is paramount,” the official affirmed.
According to details available on the EFI’s official website, the federation reported expenditures totaling nearly Rs 4 crore during the 2023-24 period. For the upcoming 2024-25 season, the proposed budget stands at Rs 5 crore 77 lakh, underscoring the financial scope and planning required for advancing India’s equestrian ambitions on the global stage.
The EFI’s proactive stance in both athlete representation and organizational governance highlights its ongoing commitment to fostering excellence in equestrian sports across India. With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, all eyes are on the IOA’s decision regarding Anush Agarwalla’s participation, while the upcoming AGM holds promise for charting the EFI’s strategic course amid internal challenges.
This dual focus on sporting achievement and administrative transparency positions the EFI at a pivotal juncture as it navigates towards enhancing India’s standing in international equestrian competitions.
