The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come under scrutiny after sharing four audio clips on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, alleging polling fraud involving Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders Supriya Sule, Nana Patole, and IPS officer Amitabh Gupta. The clips, reportedly revolving around discussions on money and cryptocurrency (Bitcoin), were released a day before the Maharashtra assembly elections. However, investigations have revealed that these clips were created using AI tools and are not authentic.
The BJP claimed that the audio recordings were conversations between the aforementioned individuals and an audit firm employee, Gaurav Mehta. In the first clip, IPS officer Amitabh Gupta is allegedly heard mispronouncing common names, which raised suspicions. AI-detection tool TrueMedia identified significant manipulation, with 100% confidence that the audio was fake. Bengaluru-based ConTrails AI also confirmed high confidence in the audio’s AI-generated nature.
In the second clip, Congress leader Nana Patole was purportedly threatening Amitabh Gupta to convert Bitcoin into cash. A comparison of Nana Patole’s voice from the clip with his interviews on The Lallantop revealed discrepancies. Both TrueMedia and Hive Moderation, another AI-detection tool, confirmed cloning and manipulation. Independent analysis by the Deepfakes Analysis Unit of the Misinformation Combat Alliance further validated these findings, noting strong indications of AI tampering.
The third audio involved Supriya Sule allegedly asking for cash in exchange for Bitcoin. Voice analysis comparing the audio to Supriya Sule’s 2023 appearance on Unfiltered by Samdish found mismatches. Supriya Sule herself issued a statement dismissing the clip as fake and filed a cybercrime complaint against the BJP for sharing manipulated content.
The fourth clip, a second alleged conversation between Amitabh Gupta and Mehta Gaurav, was also identified as AI-generated by ConTrails and other tools. BJP’s claims were further discredited when the analysis repeatedly confirmed manipulation in all four clips.
These developments raise concerns about the misuse of AI to spread misinformation, especially in politically charged environments like elections. Experts warn of the growing challenge of combating deepfake technology. The BJP has not yet responded to allegations of sharing manipulated content, but the revelations underscore the need for stricter oversight and verification in the digital era.
As the controversy unfolds, leaders like Supriya Sule have called for accountability and stricter measures to prevent such malicious practices, which could undermine democratic processes.
