The 33rd annual meeting between the Navies and Coast Guards of India and Sri Lanka recently convened onboard INS Sumitra, marking a significant milestone in their commitment to maritime security and cooperation. This gathering took place at the India and Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line, off Point Calimere in the Palk Bay, reaffirming the shared dedication of India and Sri Lanka to safeguarding their maritime interests.

Rear Admiral BAKS Banagoda, Commander of the North Central Naval Area (NCNA) of the Sri Lanka Navy, led the distinguished Sri Lankan delegation. On the Indian side, Rear Admiral Ravi Kumar Dhingra, Flag Officer Commanding Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA), spearheaded the delegation. The meeting also saw the participation of representatives from Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), the Defence Advisor to the High Commission of India in Colombo, and other senior officers from both countries.
At the core of this crucial meeting was the discussion of pressing maritime security issues in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar region. Topics ranged from ensuring the safety of fishermen to implementing measures to combat contraband trafficking and addressing various maritime challenges. Furthermore, attendees explored strategies to enhance the existing communication network and enable the seamless exchange of vital information between the two Navies and Coast Guard units, facilitating coordinated actions when necessary.
Both sides underscored the paramount importance of mutual cooperation in operations and expressed their commitment to implement the decisions made during the meeting. These decisions are poised to bolster maritime security in the region, ensuring the safety and stability of the Indo-Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line.
