India and Indonesia have taken a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relations, focusing on defence manufacturing, supply chain collaboration, and regional stability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo for extensive discussions on Saturday, marking a new phase of partnership between the two nations. President Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo is on a three-day visit to India and will serve as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
In his post-meeting statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Indonesia as an “important partner” for India within the 10-nation ASEAN bloc and the broader Indo-Pacific region. Highlighting their shared commitment to a rules-based regional order, Modi emphasized that “freedom of navigation should be ensured in line with international law,” an assertion that comes against the backdrop of China’s increasing military activities in the Indo-Pacific.
Both leaders discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, agreeing to work jointly in defence manufacturing and supply chains to bolster economic and security ties. An agreement signed during the talks on maritime security further cements the partnership, focusing on crime prevention, search and rescue operations, and capacity building. Narendra Modi stressed that this agreement will enhance cooperation in critical areas of mutual interest.
The discussions also touched upon diversifying trade and increasing market access to strengthen economic ties. Narendra Modi highlighted the potential for collaboration in emerging sectors like financial technology, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital public infrastructure, signaling a commitment to innovation-driven growth.
In addition to economic cooperation, both sides reiterated the importance of maritime security, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and de-radicalization efforts. India also welcomed Indonesia’s recent inclusion in the BRICS group, underlining its growing role on the global stage.
President Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo described the discussions as “very frank” and expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in key sectors. “I have given directions to our officials that we need to accelerate the economic partnership with India,” he remarked, signaling a proactive approach to deepening ties.
This renewed momentum in India-Indonesia relations underscores their shared vision for regional stability, economic growth, and strategic collaboration, setting a promising tone for their future engagements.
