Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has attributed the proliferation of high-scoring matches in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season to the Impact Player rule, which provides batters with an added advantage to go hard at the bowlers.
Speaking after his team’s narrow four-run loss against Delhi Capitals, Gill acknowledged the role of the Impact Player rule in influencing the dynamics of the game, particularly in favor of the batting side.
“The Impact Player has a bit of role in making the matches high scoring,” Gill remarked, noting that the provision offers batters an additional layer of cushion to attack the bowlers with more freedom. He emphasized that this liberty encourages batters to sustain their aggressive approach throughout the innings, thus contributing to the escalation of run-scoring.
Despite Gujarat Titans’ promising start, their bowlers allowed Delhi Capitals to stage a remarkable comeback, with Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel orchestrating a formidable 113-run partnership. Gill conceded that his team erred in giving away extra runs in the latter stages of the innings, which ultimately proved costly.
While Shubman Gill acknowledged the challenges posed by defending a target on a small ground, he underscored the importance of bowlers executing their plans effectively, especially in the absence of significant assistance from the pitch.
Delhi Capitals’ match-winning captain Rishabh Pant, who showcased his destructive batting prowess with an unbeaten 88 off 43 balls, expressed his joy at returning to form after enduring a prolonged absence due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
Risabh Pant attributed his resurgence to the time spent on the field, emphasizing the significance of every moment in aiding his recovery and boosting his confidence. The wicketkeeper-batsman emphasized his commitment to giving his all on the field and highlighted the positive impact of spending substantial time in the middle on his performance.
