Former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Narsingh Pancham Yadav has been elected as the chairman of the Athletes’ Commission of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The election took place during the ongoing Federation Cup in Varanasi, with Narsingh’s appointment marking a significant milestone in the representation of athletes within the federation.
The formation of the Athletes’ Commission was a prerequisite set by the United World Wrestling (UWW) as part of the conditions for lifting the suspension of the WFI earlier this year in February. Among the eight candidates vying for the seven available positions on the commission, Narsingh emerged as the chairman following a democratic election process.
Joining Narsingh on the commission are Sahil (Delhi), Smitha AS (Kerala), Bharti Bhaghei (UP), Khushboo S Pawar (Gujarat), Nikki (Haryana), and Sweta Dubey (Bengal), with Nikki assuming the role of the convener. The members of the commission have been elected for a term of two years.
Narsingh Yadav’s illustrious wrestling career, which includes a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships, has made him a prominent figure in Indian wrestling. Despite facing challenges, such as the high-profile doping controversy ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Narsingh’s resilience and dedication to the sport have earned him widespread respect within the wrestling community.
Following the conclusion of his ban in July 2020, Narsingh Yadav has continued to contribute to Indian wrestling, showcasing his talent and determination in international competitions such as the 2021 Asian Championships, where he clinched a bronze medal in the 79kg category.
The election of Narsingh Pancham Yadav and the other members of the Athletes’ Commission reflects the WFI’s commitment to fostering athlete representation and empowerment within the federation. With athletes at the forefront, the commission is poised to address the concerns and aspirations of wrestlers across the country, further strengthening the sport of wrestling in India.
As Narsingh Yadav assumes his role as chairman, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Indian wrestlers. His leadership, coupled with the collective efforts of the commission members, holds promise for the continued growth and success of wrestling in India under the auspices of the Wrestling Federation of India.
