  • IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Guwahati for next 3–4 days

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Guwahati over the next three to four days, raising concerns among residents and authorities about potential disruptions to daily life. The alert has prompted the Assam State Disaster Management Authority to release a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety guidelines.

According to official forecasts, isolated areas within the city may receive rainfall ranging between 7 centimetres and 20 centimetres within a 24-hour period. Such intense precipitation, particularly when concentrated over short durations, has the potential to significantly impact urban infrastructure and mobility. The rainfall is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, which may further intensify the overall weather impact and increase risks for residents.

Weather Conditions Likely to Disrupt Normal Life

Meteorological experts from the India Meteorological Department have indicated that the prevailing atmospheric conditions are conducive to sustained rainfall activity over the region. The convergence of moisture-laden winds and local weather systems is expected to maintain the intensity of rainfall across multiple days, leading to cumulative effects that could strain the city’s drainage and civic systems.

Urban flooding remains a primary concern, particularly in low-lying areas of Guwahati where waterlogging has historically disrupted normal life during heavy rain spells. Roads in several parts of the city are prone to water accumulation, which can lead to severe traffic congestion and delays in public and private transportation. Commuters may face longer travel times, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions during peak rainfall hours.

In addition to waterlogging, the risk of localized landslides in hillside areas surrounding the city has also increased. These regions, often characterized by unstable soil and slopes, become especially vulnerable during periods of prolonged or intense rainfall. Authorities have flagged such zones for close monitoring, emphasizing the importance of early warning signs such as soil movement, cracks in the ground, or sudden water seepage.

Thunderstorms and lightning associated with the rainfall pose additional safety risks. Gusty winds may cause damage to temporary structures, uproot trees, and disrupt power supply in certain areas. Officials have cautioned residents to remain indoors during severe weather conditions and avoid exposure to open spaces during lightning activity.

Authorities Activate Emergency Response Measures

In response to the forecast, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority has activated emergency preparedness protocols to ensure a swift and coordinated response to any adverse situation. Disaster response teams, including local administration units, municipal bodies, and emergency services, have been placed on high alert.

Officials have confirmed that continuous monitoring of the evolving weather situation is underway, with real-time updates being shared across relevant departments. Control rooms have been set up to coordinate relief and rescue operations if required. Equipment necessary for clearing waterlogged roads, managing traffic, and responding to emergency calls has been mobilized and kept ready for immediate deployment.

Authorities have also focused on ensuring that essential services remain operational during the period of heavy rainfall. Efforts are being made to maintain the functionality of drainage systems, prevent blockages, and address any infrastructural issues that may arise. In vulnerable zones, precautionary measures are being taken to minimize risks to residents and property.

The advisory issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority specifically urges daily commuters and long-distance travellers to plan their movements carefully. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, as sudden weather changes can create unsafe conditions on roads and highways.

Public Advisory Emphasises Vigilance and Preparedness

Residents of Guwahati have been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Those living in low-lying areas are advised to stay watchful for rising water levels and to move to safer locations if flooding conditions worsen. Similarly, individuals residing in hillside regions have been cautioned to remain aware of landslide risks and to report any unusual ground activity to authorities.

The India Meteorological Department has emphasized the importance of staying updated through official weather bulletins and alerts. Timely access to accurate information can help residents make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary exposure to risk.

Basic safety measures have also been highlighted, including avoiding waterlogged roads, refraining from standing under trees during thunderstorms, and securing loose objects that may be displaced by strong winds. Citizens are encouraged to keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible and to cooperate with authorities in case of evacuation or rescue operations.

Community awareness and participation are seen as critical components in managing the impact of extreme weather events. By adhering to advisories and maintaining a proactive approach, residents can significantly reduce the risks associated with heavy rainfall.

Increasing Frequency of Extreme Weather Events

The current alert also reflects a broader trend of increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across various parts of India. Experts attribute this pattern to changing climatic conditions, which have led to more unpredictable and intense rainfall episodes in urban and semi-urban regions.

Cities like Guwahati, with a mix of plains and hilly terrain, face unique challenges in managing such weather events. Rapid urbanization, combined with limitations in infrastructure, often exacerbates the impact of heavy rainfall. As a result, there is a growing need for long-term planning, improved drainage systems, and enhanced disaster preparedness mechanisms.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strengthening resilience against such challenges through better planning and coordination. However, they have also emphasized that public cooperation remains essential in ensuring safety and minimizing disruption during adverse weather conditions.

The ongoing situation serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness, awareness, and timely action in dealing with natural events. As the city braces for the predicted spell of heavy rainfall, both officials and residents are expected to remain vigilant and responsive to evolving conditions.
