India is set to significantly enhance its eastern military preparedness with the inauguration of a newly upgraded runway at the Indian Air Force’s Car Nicobar Air Base. According to defence sources, the resurfaced runway will be formally inaugurated by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on January 2, 2026.
Located in the strategically vital Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Car Nicobar Air Base occupies a crucial position overlooking the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest maritime choke points. A substantial portion of global trade and energy shipments passes through this corridor, making it a region of immense strategic interest for India.
Major Boost to Operational Capability
The upgraded runway significantly enhances the Indian Air Force’s ability to conduct sustained and high-tempo operations in the eastern theatre. Defence officials stated that the runway has been resurfaced to accommodate heavier aircraft and increased operational frequency.
As part of the upgrade, apron areas have been expanded, allowing more aircraft to be stationed simultaneously. This improvement will enable faster turnaround times during operational deployments. Additionally, a newly developed taxi track has been designed with contingency planning in mind and can be used as a secondary runway during emergencies, greatly enhancing operational flexibility.
The improvements will be operationalised under the 37 Wing Air Force Base, which will now function with enhanced infrastructure and a newly inducted detachment. This development significantly strengthens India’s forward military posture and rapid response capability in the eastern Indian Ocean region.
Enhanced Air Power Presence
Following the inauguration, Su-30 MKI fighter jets are expected to take the lead role in operations from Car Nicobar. These frontline aircraft will be supported by Mirage fighter jets, which are also likely to be deployed in the area.
Sources indicate that the aircraft will conduct long-range strike drills and live-fire exercises, aimed at sharpening combat readiness and improving operational coordination in maritime strike scenarios.
The upgraded airbase will also enhance the Indian Armed Forces’ ability to conduct missile testing and surveillance operations in the Andaman and Nicobar region, further strengthening India’s deterrence posture in the Indo-Pacific.
Strategic Importance
Military analysts view the upgrade as a key component of India’s broader strategy to reinforce its presence in the eastern Indian Ocean amid evolving regional security dynamics. The proximity of Car Nicobar to Southeast Asia and major international sea lanes makes it a critical outpost for monitoring maritime movements and ensuring regional stability.
With growing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, the strengthened airbase sends a strong signal of India’s intent to safeguard its strategic interests and ensure swift response capabilities in the region.
