An Indian Air Force (IAF) jawan fainted during the 92nd-anniversary celebration of the Indian Air Force at Tambaram Air Force Station in Chennai on Tuesday. The incident occurred just days after a tragic event during an IAF air show at Marina Beach, Chennai, where five people lost their lives due to extreme heat conditions.
Visuals from the anniversary event showed the unconscious jawan being carried away on a stretcher. While the specific reason for his fainting is yet to be confirmed, the incident has drawn attention, especially following the fatalities at the earlier air show event in the city. On October 6, five individuals who had attended the grand IAF air show succumbed to the intense heat, with over a hundred others requiring medical attention due to heat-related issues. The air show, which drew large crowds to Marina Beach, was held as part of the IAF’s anniversary celebrations.
Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister Ma Subramanian addressed the air show incident in a press conference on Monday, acknowledging the severe impact of the soaring temperatures during the event. He provided updates on those affected, stating that 102 individuals were initially impacted by the heat, and 93 required hospitalization. Of the five people who died, two were brought to Omandurar General Hospital, two to Royapet General Hospital, and one to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. The minister also noted that only seven patients remained hospitalized as of Monday, with four at Omandurar Hospital, two at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, and one at Royapet Hospital.
The opposition has criticized the Tamil Nadu government and the Chennai police for their handling of the air show, blaming them for a lack of proper planning and administration. BJP Tamil Nadu Vice President Narayanan Thirupathy voiced his concerns, stating, “The maladministration and worst traffic arrangements by the state police have led to the loss of five lives and hundreds being hospitalized.” Thirupathy also highlighted the need for better intelligence and coordination to avoid such tragedies in the future, holding the government accountable for the failures.
The air show, organized by the Indian Air Force on Sunday at Marina Beach, was a major public event ahead of the 92nd Air Force Day. While it was meant to be a celebration of the IAF’s prowess, the deaths and subsequent criticism have cast a shadow over the proceedings. The IAF, along with state authorities, is now facing questions about the event’s organization and the lack of preventive measures in place to combat the extreme heat that affected the large crowd.
This latest incident involving the fainting of the jawan during the IAF’s anniversary celebration further underscores the need for greater attention to safety and public welfare during such large-scale events.
