In today’s world, scammers are exploiting advanced AI technology to clone voices of loved ones, creating convincing but fake calls that trick families into sending money. These scams prey on the deep emotions and fears people feel when they hear a familiar voice in distress, leading to devastating financial and emotional consequences. Two recent cases from Delhi and Mumbai highlight how easily criminals use AI voice cloning to manipulate victims, showing that the threat is growing and becoming more sophisticated.
In Delhi, Laxmi Chand Chawla received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer who said that Chawla’s nephew, Kapil, was in police custody over a serious charge. The caller then transferred the call to Kapil, whose voice, though cloned, sounded genuinely frightened and pleaded for help. The family was pressured into sending money to “resolve” the issue, but later discovered Kapil was safe at home and the entire incident was a scam. Similarly, in Mumbai, KT Vinod received a call supposedly from the Indian Embassy with his son Amit crying for help, only to find out later that the voice was artificially generated and his son was unharmed. These stories expose the emotional manipulation scammers use, capitalizing on technology and trust.
The Growing Threat of AI Voice Cloning
AI voice cloning technology has advanced rapidly, with scammers needing only a few seconds of recorded audio to create near-perfect replicas of a person’s voice. According to data from AIPRM, AI voice cloning scams are among the fastest-growing fraud types in 2024, with many adults unable to distinguish between real and cloned voices. The ease of cloning means scammers can quickly generate false calls that sound authentic, often demanding money under false pretenses such as legal trouble or emergencies.
Experts warn that even simple sounds like saying “hello” repeatedly can provide enough voice data to criminals. This raises concerns about sharing voice recordings or personal videos online, which can be exploited to create fake voices. Sagar Vishnoi, an AI and cybersecurity expert, stresses the importance of having secret phrases or questions that only the real person would know to help identify genuine callers. He also advises against trusting calls from unknown numbers without verifying them independently.
Protective Measures and Reporting
To combat these scams, experts recommend several precautions: reporting incidents to cybercrime authorities through official portals, freezing bank accounts if a scam is suspected, changing passwords, and using multi-factor authentication. While AI voice cloning scams are complex and emotionally charged, awareness and practical steps can reduce their impact. Authorities emphasize the importance of public education and real-time detection tools to keep pace with rapidly evolving scam techniques, encouraging people to stay vigilant and verify before trusting unexpected urgent calls.
The rise of AI in daily life brings convenience but also new vulnerabilities. As scammers become more advanced, protecting oneself requires a mix of technological safeguards and informed caution.
