Today marked a historic milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius jointly inaugurated several crucial projects via video conferencing. The new Airstrip and St. James Jetty, alongside six community development initiatives, have been unveiled on the Agalega Island in Mauritius. Elaborating on the details, the Ministry of External Affairs said, this significant event not only underscores the robust and enduring development partnership between the two nations but also addresses the pressing need for enhanced connectivity and socio-economic development in the region.
Mauritius PM hails ties with India
Speaking during the event, Prime Minister Jugnauth hailed the occasion as a testament to the exemplary collaboration between India and Mauritius. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his unwavering commitment to elevating the Mauritius-India relationship and praised India’s pivotal role in financing the projects. Significantly, the new infrastructure in Agalega fulfills a long-held aspiration of Mauritius and underscores India’s steadfast support for its maritime security and socio-economic advancement.
A key ally
Further, in his address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the vibrant and unique partnership between India and Mauritius, highlighting Mauritius as a key ally under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ and Vision SAGAR. The Prime Minister emphasized the deep-rooted cultural and linguistic ties between the two nations, exemplified by recent initiatives like the UPI and RuPay Card services, which modernize digital connectivity.
Speaking of Development partnerships, PM Modi said. It has been the cornerstone of the political ties between India and Mauritius. Prime Minister Modi further emphasizing India’s commitment to aligning its assistance with Mauritius’s priorities, whether in security or health. Over the past decade, India has extended significant financial assistance and support to Mauritius, including during crises like the Covid pandemic and oil spills.
Additionally during his speech, Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed India’s dedication to effecting positive change for the people of Mauritius, citing extensive developmental projects ranging from metro rail lines to healthcare infrastructure. He reiterated his personal commitment to fulfilling promises made to the people of Agalega, symbolizing a broader commitment to enhancing ease of living and connectivity across Mauritius.
