Residents in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram may need to brace for a wet day ahead, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert warning for the National Capital Region (NCR). The alert comes with the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, as monsoon conditions continue to intensify across northern India. While there are no heatwave conditions expected, citizens have been advised to remain cautious due to potential disruptions.
IMD forecasts rain, thunderstorm and gusty winds in NCR
According to the IMD, areas under yellow alert include North Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Southwest Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. These regions can expect a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated pockets. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 kmph are also likely. Noida and Gurgaon are specifically listed among the areas expected to receive rainfall today.
The yellow warning issued by the IMD implies that while the weather may not be severe enough for emergency action, it could still cause minor local disruptions. Commuters and residents are advised to take basic precautions against waterlogging, slippery roads, and low visibility during heavy spells of rain.
Temperature-wise, the capital is expected to remain comfortable, with maximum temperatures ranging between 33 to 35°C and minimums between 26 to 28°C. On Thursday morning, the minimum temperature was recorded at 28.6°C—slightly above the seasonal average. Relative humidity stood at a high 74% as of 8:30 am.
Monsoon advancing across north India; alerts in multiple states
The IMD also shared updates on the progression of the southwest monsoon. The northern limit of the monsoon currently extends across parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Conditions remain favorable for the further advancement of the monsoon into more areas of these states, including the remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh, over the next 24 hours.
Apart from Delhi-NCR, yellow warnings for potential adverse weather have been issued for East and West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and West Rajasthan. More serious orange alerts are in place for Uttarakhand, Punjab, and East Rajasthan due to expected intense rainfall activity.
The IMD also noted that isolated places across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Interior Karnataka, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Konkan and Goa, and parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may experience heavy rainfall.
In southern India, monsoon showers gained strength in Kerala on Thursday, leading to flooding in parts of Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur districts. This prompted an orange alert in the region. Meanwhile, Chandigarh has seen its earliest monsoon onset since 2021, marking a significant weather development for the region.
The weather department has advised citizens across affected states to stay alert and follow local advisories, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, as monsoon intensity continues to increase across the country.
