During a panel discussion on the evolving energy landscape, Caroline Hargrove, the Chief Technology Officer of Ceres Power, expressed apprehension regarding the escalating energy consumption associated with the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
Hargrove, whose company specializes in clean energy technology, particularly electrolysers for green hydrogen, emphasized the potential impact of AI usage on energy consumption. She specifically mentioned the energy demand posed by AI platforms like ChatGPT, highlighting the need for careful management to prevent excessive consumption.
A recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) underscored the significant energy requirements of AI technologies. According to the report, the AI industry is projected to consume approximately ten times more electricity by 2026 compared to its demand in 2023.
Highlighting the concern further, Hargrove cautioned against the unintended consequences of unchecked AI usage, emphasizing the importance of using data-driven optimization strategies to minimize energy consumption.
Echoing Hargrove’s sentiments, Mary de Wysocki, Chief Sustainability Officer at Cisco, stressed the importance of responsible AI usage to ensure that the technology is deployed where it can deliver tangible benefits rather than being used solely for entertainment purposes.
Bertrand Piccard, Founder and Chairman of Solar Impulse Foundation, offered a contrasting perspective by highlighting the potential of AI to reduce energy consumption when managed effectively. Piccard cited examples such as smart electricity grids that leverage AI to optimize energy distribution and consumption, thereby minimizing wastage.
However, concerns regarding AI’s energy demand amid the climate crisis persist. The Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) coalition recently recommended that technology companies disclose the energy usage and emissions associated with their AI models transparently. Additionally, regulatory bodies are urged to enforce stringent transparency requirements with clear penalties for non-compliance.
