Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, issued a stark warning to Israel, stating that they “would know what our second retaliation would be” following Iran’s recent drone and missile attack on Israel. In an exclusive interview with Sky News correspondent James Matthews after an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York, Iravani emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting that Israel understands the potential consequences of further aggression from Iran.
The attack, which saw Iran launch over 300 drones and missiles into Israel in response to a strike on an Iranian consular building in Syria, has heightened tensions between the two nations. The strike in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals, has been widely attributed to Israel.
Israel’s war cabinet convened to discuss possible retaliation against Iran, with officials signaling a strong response. However, Iravani characterized Israel’s response as a “threat, not an action,” urging against further military escalation.
Despite the escalating tensions, Iravani defended Iran’s actions, asserting that it was their “legitimate right to respond” to what they perceived as aggression against their diplomatic premises. He dismissed concerns about the risk of wider conflict, reiterating Iran’s stance on the matter.
In response to Israel’s preparations for potential retaliation, Israeli officials, including centrist minister Benny Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, emphasized the need for a regional coalition to address the perceived threat posed by Iran. Gantz emphasized the importance of exacting a price from Iran, while Gallant raised concerns about Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions.
International voices have called for restraint and de-escalation in the region, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning of the potential for a devastating full-scale conflict. Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood reiterated the US commitment to defending Israel while urging Iran to refrain from further provocations.
As tensions persist, the international community remains vigilant, seeking to prevent further escalation and promote dialogue to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict between Iran and Israel.
