  • The government has warned that strict action will be taken against hoarding and black marketing of Liquefied Petroleum Gas while assuring that cooking gas supplies across India remain stable.
  • Authorities have encouraged households near piped gas networks to switch to Piped Natural Gas connections to ensure uninterrupted cooking fuel supply.

The government has issued a strong warning against hoarding and black marketing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) while assuring the public that cooking gas supplies across the country remain stable. Officials stated that adequate LPG stocks are available with distributors and that supply chains are functioning normally despite concerns triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The advisory comes after reports of panic bookings by consumers worried about possible supply disruptions. Authorities have urged citizens not to stockpile LPG cylinders unnecessarily and to place refill orders only when required.

In addition to warning against hoarding, the government has also encouraged households located near piped natural gas networks to consider switching to piped cooking gas. According to officials, nearly 60 lakh households across the country have access to piped natural gas infrastructure, which can provide a reliable and convenient alternative to LPG cylinders.

The advisory reflects the government’s efforts to maintain stability in the supply of essential household fuel while preventing artificial shortages caused by panic buying or illegal stockpiling. Officials emphasised that maintaining orderly distribution and responsible consumption is crucial to ensuring that cooking gas remains available for all households.

Authorities also reiterated that strict action would be taken against individuals or businesses attempting to exploit the situation by hoarding LPG cylinders or engaging in black marketing. Such practices can disrupt supply chains and create unnecessary shortages, particularly during periods of heightened public concern.

Government Assures Stable LPG Supply Across the Country

Officials from the petroleum ministry have reassured consumers that LPG distributors currently hold sufficient stock to meet household demand. The government emphasised that there is no shortage of cooking gas and that supply networks continue to operate smoothly across the country.

Consumers have been advised to avoid unnecessary panic booking or queuing at LPG dealerships. Instead, they should place refill orders through online platforms or authorised digital channels only when they genuinely require a new cylinder. This approach helps prevent artificial demand spikes that could disrupt the distribution process.

The government noted that the sudden increase in refill bookings in recent days appears to have been driven largely by concerns related to the geopolitical situation in West Asia. Global tensions in that region have occasionally affected energy markets in the past, leading to speculation about possible supply disruptions.

However, officials clarified that domestic LPG distribution systems remain stable and that the country maintains adequate reserves to meet consumer demand. Authorities also emphasised that priority is being given to essential sectors such as households, hospitals, educational institutions and other critical services that depend on cooking gas for daily operations.

To ensure uninterrupted supply for these sectors, the government has adjusted distribution strategies where necessary. Supplies to commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants have been temporarily moderated in certain areas to prioritise domestic consumers and essential services.

Officials stressed that such adjustments are precautionary measures intended to ensure that households and vital institutions continue receiving cooking gas without interruption.

Crackdown on Hoarding and Promotion of Piped Natural Gas

The government has directed state administrations to take strict action against individuals involved in hoarding LPG cylinders or selling them illegally at inflated prices. Senior officials from the petroleum and civil supplies ministries have held meetings with state and union territory authorities to review the situation and coordinate enforcement measures.

These meetings included discussions with civil supplies departments responsible for monitoring the distribution of essential commodities. States have been asked to remain vigilant and take swift action if cases of hoarding or black marketing are detected.

Authorities cited recent enforcement actions as examples of the government’s approach to preventing misuse of fuel supplies. In one instance, petrol pump dealerships in Tamil Nadu were suspended after it was discovered that fuel was being dispensed into jerrycans in violation of regulations.

Officials indicated that similar strict measures will be taken if any violations related to LPG distribution are identified. Ensuring fair distribution of essential fuels remains a priority for both central and state governments.

At the same time, the government is encouraging households to adopt piped natural gas where infrastructure is available. Piped natural gas systems deliver cooking gas directly to homes through underground pipelines, eliminating the need for LPG cylinders.

For households located within the reach of PNG networks, switching to piped gas can offer several advantages. It removes the need for cylinder refills, provides continuous gas supply and often reduces concerns about availability during periods of high demand.

Officials noted that approximately 60 lakh households across the country already have access to PNG infrastructure. Expanding the use of piped natural gas is also part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise energy distribution systems and improve urban infrastructure.

By encouraging the adoption of PNG connections while ensuring strict enforcement against hoarding, authorities aim to maintain stability in cooking gas supplies and prevent disruptions caused by panic buying or illegal practices.
