The Government of India has strongly refuted claims made by Indian Overseas Congress chairperson Sam Pitroda regarding a hacking incident at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ranchi. The Ministry of Education dismissed Sam Pitroda’s statements as “baseless” and “ignorant,” emphasizing that no such IIT exists in Ranchi. The clarification comes after Sam Pitroda alleged that an event he was addressing at IIT Ranchi was disrupted by a hacking incident in which obscene content was played.

Sam Pitroda, who is a close aide of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, took to social media to share his version of the incident, stating that while he was delivering a lecture to hundreds of students at “IIT Ranchi,” someone hacked into the system and broadcasted pornography. “I was speaking at the Ranchi IIT to almost several hundred students, and someone hacked in and started showing all the pornography. We had to turn it off. Now, is that democracy? Is that fair?” Sam Pitroda wrote on his social media handle, questioning the state of cybersecurity and democracy in the country.

Responding swiftly to these claims, the Ministry of Education issued a statement pointing out that there is no IIT in Ranchi, though the city is home to an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT). The ministry further clarified that IIIT Ranchi had not invited Pitroda for any event, either physically or virtually. “IIIT Ranchi has also confirmed that Shri Sam Pitroda was not invited by the institute to any conference or seminar to deliver a lecture, physically or virtually,” the ministry stated.

The government went a step further, accusing Sam Pitroda of attempting to tarnish the reputation of India’s prestigious IITs by making unfounded allegations. “This institution has stood the test of time and produced some of the brightest minds in the country. Unlike such an uninformed person, IITs’ reputation is built on the merit, hard work, and achievement of many students, teachers, and academia,” the ministry said in a strong-worded statement.

Condemning Sam Pitroda’s remarks, the government warned of potential legal action against any individual or entity attempting to malign the reputation of India’s premier institutions. “The Ministry of Education condemns the statement and reiterates that any such attempt to malign the image of the premier institution will face legal repercussions,” the ministry asserted, making it clear that spreading misinformation about educational institutions would not be taken lightly.

Sam Pitroda’s comments have stirred controversy, with critics accusing him of irresponsibly spreading falsehoods. The controversy has further fueled debates on the credibility of political figures making public statements without verifying facts. This is not the first time Sam Pitroda has found himself in the middle of a controversy. Previously, he had sparked a political storm by claiming that the India-China border dispute was “blown out of proportion” and that the United States had a habit of “defining an enemy” to serve its strategic interests. His remarks had drawn widespread criticism, particularly in light of US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate in the India-China border issue during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington last week.

The latest controversy involving Sam Pitroda raises concerns over misinformation and the need for fact-checking before making public statements. With the government taking a firm stand against such claims, the incident has highlighted the importance of responsible communication, particularly by political figures with a large audience. As the issue continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Sam Pitroda will retract his statement or if further action will be taken against him for spreading misinformation regarding India’s premier institutions.
