More than 50,000 Palestinians have died since Israel began its military campaign in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The death toll, currently at 50,021, represents roughly 2.1% of Gaza’s population. Along with these deaths, over 113,000 people have been injured. While these figures are widely cited by international organizations, they are disputed by Israel, which has restricted independent verification of the data. The casualties reported do not distinguish between civilians and fighters, but past analyses suggest that women and children make up a significant portion of the victims. The ongoing war, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, continues to devastate Gaza, with mounting civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
The official death toll stands at 50,021, accounting for approximately 2.1% of Gaza’s pre-war population of 2.3 million—meaning about one in every 46 residents has been killed.
Additionally, 113,274 people have been reported injured since the offensive began. The Gaza Ministry of Health (MoH) figures, which have been widely cited by international institutions and the United Nations, remain a point of contention, as Israel disputes their accuracy. Independent verification remains difficult due to Israel’s restrictions on international journalists, including those from the BBC, from entering Gaza.
The reported casualties do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but past analyses indicate a significant proportion of the dead are women and children. The UN Human Rights Office stated in November that nearly 70% of verified victims over a six-month period were women and children. Furthermore, a study published by The Lancet in January suggested that the actual death toll could be substantially higher—potentially exceeding official reports by up to 41%.
The war erupted on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas-led attack on Israel that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the taking of 251 hostages. In response, Israel launched a large-scale military campaign that has not only inflicted heavy casualties but also caused extensive destruction of homes, infrastructure, and essential services in Gaza.
The humanitarian toll continues to escalate. On Sunday alone, at least 39 additional deaths were reported, raising the total number of casualties to 673 since Israel resumed military operations on Tuesday. The ongoing hostilities have intensified concerns about civilian safety and access to humanitarian aid in the besieged territory.
As the conflict rages on, international pressure continues to mount for a ceasefire and greater humanitarian access, but a resolution remains elusive amid the deepening crisis.
