Head coach Gautam Gambhir has dismissed concerns over Rohit Sharma’s form, insisting that the team management evaluates the Indian captain based on his impact rather than statistical figures. His comments came after India’s emphatic victory over Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final in Dubai, securing a place in the final. When questioned about Rohit’s future in international cricket, Gautam Gambhir firmly stated that the opener’s aggressive intent sets the tone for the team and sends a strong message to the dressing room.
Rohit has accumulated 84 runs in three matches in the tournament, failing to register a significant individual score. However, Gautam Gambhir underlined that the Indian skipper’s fearless approach, similar to his role in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, has been instrumental in shaping the team’s mindset. “If your captain bats with such tempo, it signals that we want to be absolutely fearless and courageous. You judge from the runs; we judge from the impact. That’s the difference,” Gautam Gambhir remarked.
The coach criticized the tendency of journalists and experts to focus solely on averages and numbers, asserting that the dressing room values leadership and intent over statistics. Rohit, known for his ability to score big hundreds in ODIs, has altered his approach in recent years, prioritizing attacking the new ball rather than settling into an anchor role. Since the 2023 World Cup, he has consistently advocated for a fearless batting philosophy, focusing on aggressive starts to relieve pressure on the middle order.
Rohit’s position was questioned after a lean patch in Test cricket during the 2024-25 season, but he silenced critics with a century in an ODI series against England in February. Although he has not converted his starts into big scores in the Champions Trophy, his aggressive batting has allowed India’s middle-order batsmen to play with more freedom, particularly on sluggish pitches in Dubai.
India’s semi-final victory over Australia was a dominant performance, with the team chasing down 265 in 48.1 overs. Mohammed Shami led a disciplined bowling attack that restricted Australia to a below-par total, while Virat Kohli anchored the chase with a composed 84. Contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul ensured a comfortable win.
Despite India’s unbeaten run in the tournament, Gautam Gambhir maintained that there was no room for complacency. He emphasized continuous improvement and expressed hope that India would deliver their best performance in the final. India will face the winner of the second semi-final between New Zealand and South Africa, which is set to take place in Lahore. The final is scheduled for Sunday, where India will aim to secure another major ICC title under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
