In Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, authorities have successfully captured a fifth wolf from a notorious pack that has been terrorizing the local population. The wolf was apprehended on Tuesday near the Ghaghara River, an area previously associated with similar captures. This latest capture is part of ‘Operation Bhediya,’ a concerted effort by the forest department to manage the crisis. Despite this progress, one wolf from the pack remains at large.
The captured wolf was one of six that have caused widespread panic across 35 villages in Bahraich. In the past six weeks, these wolves have been responsible for the deaths of ten people, including nine children, and have injured at least 36 others. The severity of the situation has prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to classify the wolf attacks as a ‘wildlife disaster,’ leading to heightened measures to control the situation.
To address the threat, the forest department has deployed several patrol teams to monitor the affected areas during the night. These teams are using unconventional methods, including elephant dung and urine, to repel the wolves and discourage them from entering residential zones. Despite these efforts, the presence of the remaining wolf continues to pose a threat to local safety.
Experts are perplexed by the aggressive behavior of the wolves, as these animals are typically known for their gentle and docile nature. Sanjay Pathak, General Manager of UP Forest Corporation, suggested that the wolves’ unusual aggression might be linked to a need for revenge. It is speculated that the destruction of a wolf den in a nearby sugarcane field, possibly due to flooding, could have resulted in the death of wolf cubs, leading to heightened aggression from the surviving members of the pack.
The situation remains tense as forest officials and local residents continue to deal with the aftermath of the attacks. The focus now is on capturing the remaining wolf and ensuring that the remaining pack members do not pose further risks to the community. Efforts are ongoing to prevent any additional incidents and to restore safety to the affected villages in Bahraich.
