In a recent election meeting, ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) MLA P V Anwar stirred up controversy by suggesting that the DNA of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should be examined. Anwar, a businessman-turned-politician, made the remarks while addressing a gathering in the district, sparking outrage from the Congress party.
Anwar’s comments were in response to recent remarks made by Gandhi against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Gandhi had questioned why Vijayan had not been interrogated or arrested by central agencies despite allegations against him. Criticizing Gandhi’s statements, Anwar questioned how someone from the Nehru family could make such remarks and suggested that Gandhi’s DNA be examined.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in response to questions about Anwar’s remarks, justified the MLA’s comments, stating that Gandhi was not exempt from criticism. Meanwhile, the Congress party swiftly reacted to Anwar’s remarks, filing a complaint with the Election Commission and demanding action against the MLA. KPCC acting president M M Hassan urged the Commission to intervene urgently and called for a police case to be registered against Anwar for insulting Rahul Gandhi and the Nehru family.
Senior Congress leader K C Venugopal also condemned the remarks, alleging that the CPI (M) had encouraged Anwar to make derogatory comments against the Nehru family. The incident has further fueled tensions between the LDF and Congress in the run-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, highlighting the intense political rivalry in Kerala.
