FedEx has issued an advisory to warn the public against a growing scam where fraudsters impersonate courier company employees to trick victims into transferring money. The scam, commonly known as the ‘FedEx courier scam,’ has emerged as a serious concern across India, with many individuals losing large sums of money despite repeated warnings.
The scam involves fraudsters calling unsuspecting victims, claiming to be employees of reputable courier companies like FedEx, and luring them into revealing sensitive personal information or transferring money. One recent case involved an India Today journalist who received a call from someone pretending to be a FedEx employee. The caller claimed that the journalist’s Aadhaar number was linked to a parcel containing illegal drugs. Although the journalist recognized the scam and avoided falling victim, many others have not been as fortunate, with some individuals losing lakhs of rupees to similar fraudulent schemes.
In response to the growing number of incidents, FedEx issued a statement urging people to stay alert and avoid sharing personal information with unsolicited callers. The company emphasized that it does not request personal information via phone calls, mail, or email unless the customer has directly initiated contact or requested assistance. FedEx advised individuals receiving suspicious communications to immediately report the matter to local law enforcement or the cybercrime department of the Government of India.
“FedEx does not request personal information through unsolicited phone calls, mail, or email for goods being shipped or held, unless requested or initiated by customers. Individuals should immediately contact the local law enforcement authorities or report to the cybercrime department of the government of India,” the company said in its statement.
The advisory comes as the ‘FedEx courier scam’ continues to victimize people across the country. Despite multiple warnings and cybercrime awareness campaigns, the scam shows no signs of slowing down, with fraudsters constantly evolving their tactics to deceive more individuals.
This particular incident highlights the increasing need for the public to stay cautious and verify the authenticity of any communication received from supposed courier company representatives. As the cybercrime rate continues to rise, FedEx and other companies are actively encouraging individuals to report such scams to protect themselves and others from falling prey to these fraudulent schemes.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to share such advisories widely to prevent further incidents.
