Tech billionaire Elon Musk has once again publicly endorsed former U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that Trump must win the upcoming election to protect freedom and meritocracy in America. Musk, who has not been heavily involved in politics in the past, expressed his views in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “If we want to preserve freedom and a meritocracy in America, then Trump must win.”
The Tesla CEO’s remarks were in response to a post praising Musk for his ability to synthesize complex information. This came after Musk was accused by another X user of spreading misinformation and aligning himself with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement.
Musk’s support for Trump first became apparent after an incident at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly avoided harm during an assassination attempt. In response, Musk tweeted, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” likening Trump’s resilience to that of former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
Since then, Musk has been vocal about his support for Trump’s re-election bid. He has expressed interest in potentially working on Trump’s cabinet and conducted an exclusive interview with the former president on X, years after the platform banned Trump for “incitement of violence” following the January 6 Capitol riots.
Musk has also been critical of Trump’s political opponents, including Vice President Kamala Harris. On Wednesday, he shared an AI-generated image of Harris, accusing her of aspiring to be a “communist dictator on day one” if elected president. His post was a response to Harris’s earlier criticism of Trump, in which she accused him of planning to govern as a dictator if re-elected.
Although Musk supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and worked closely with the Obama administration, he has now shifted his stance and is publicly backing Trump for the 2024 race. In the 2016 election, Musk had voted for Hillary Clinton against Trump.
