The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) recently formalized a significant collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong, marking the establishment of India’s inaugural ‘Gati Shakti Research Chair’. This pioneering initiative aims to elevate the standard of academic research in multimodal logistics, particularly with a focus on the North-Eastern region.
The primary objective of the Chair is to facilitate high-quality research endeavors dedicated to multimodal logistics, emphasizing the unique logistical landscape of the North-East. It will endeavor to accumulate knowledge concerning the development strategies and operational practices of multimodal logistics in this region, thereby fostering innovation and capacity-building initiatives.
Moreover, the establishment of the Gati Shakti Research Chair seeks to forge global partnerships with leading experts in the field, fostering collaborative efforts to enhance logistical capabilities. Through active engagement with stakeholders such as the logistics industry, governmental bodies, and local authorities, the Chair aims to bridge the gap between research endeavors and practical applications.
Aligned with the vision of the PM Gati Shakti Masterplan, the Chair will play a pivotal role in bolstering the logistical infrastructure of the East and North-East regions, thereby facilitating economic growth and regional development.
During the signing ceremony, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the transformative potential of this initiative, particularly in empowering the North-East to emerge as a hub for logistics research and development. He emphasized the invaluable opportunities this Chair would offer to students and professionals seeking to specialize in this dynamic field.
In conjunction with the establishment of the Chair, a Strategic Round Table was convened to deliberate on multimodal logistics strategies tailored to the needs of the North Eastern Region (NER). The discussions aimed to formulate a cohesive logistics policy aligned with national objectives, fostering regional connectivity and economic resilience.
