In a historic moment at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time champions, secured their 150th win in T20 cricket, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s history.
Facing off against Delhi Capitals (DC) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter, MI clinched victory by defending a formidable target of 235 runs. The match witnessed stellar performances from MI’s openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, as well as from Tim David and Romario Shepherd in the later stages of the innings. DC, in response, could only muster 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Notably, MI’s achievement of 150 wins excludes victories obtained in Super Overs following tied matches. Including matches from both the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League T20, MI has played a total of 273 matches, securing victory in 150 encounters while suffering 117 defeats. Two matches concluded with no result, and MI has won and lost two matches each in Super Overs.
With this milestone, MI surpasses Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which sits at the second position with 148 victories in T20 cricket. CSK, over the course of its history, has played 253 T20 matches, winning 148 and losing 101, with two matches ending in no result and two losses in Super Overs after tied games.
The Indian national team holds the third spot with 140 wins in 219 matches, excluding four Super Over victories. Additionally, six matches ended in no result, one ended in a tie, and the team faced defeat in 68 encounters.
This landmark victory also marks MI’s 50th win at the Wankhede Stadium, making them the IPL franchise with the most wins at a single venue. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) follows closely with 48 wins at the Eden Gardens, while CSK has secured 47 victories at the Chepauk Stadium.
Furthermore, Mumbai Indians have maintained a perfect record in matches where they defended totals of 200 runs or more, winning all 14 encounters.
In the match against DC, MI posted a commanding total of 234/5, propelled by strong contributions from their batsmen. In response, DC displayed resilience through noteworthy performances by Prithvi Shaw, Abhishek Porel, and Tristan Stubbs. However, MI’s bowling attack, led by Gerald Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah, proved too formidable for DC, who fell short by 29 runs.
Romario Shepherd was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-round performance, contributing with both bat and ball.
Despite MI’s win, they currently occupy the eighth position in the points table with one win and three losses, totaling two points. Meanwhile, DC finds themselves at the bottom of the table with one win in five matches, also securing two points.
