On the first day of Apple’s WWDC 2024 event, the tech giant unveiled numerous upgrades set to arrive on its devices. Among these announcements was the integration of artificial intelligence into the software upgrade for iOS 18, confirming Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT deeply into their devices as a chatbot. However, this move has sparked dissatisfaction from Elon Musk.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, expressed his disappointment with the OpenAI-Apple collaboration on X (formerly Twitter). He declared that if OpenAI’s technology finds its way into the iPhone’s operating system, Apple devices will be prohibited in his companies. Addressing Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, Elon Musk urged Apple to cease what he termed “creepy spyware,” threatening a ban on all Apple devices from his premises.
Furthermore, Elon Musk proposed stringent measures, stating that no Apple devices would be permitted within his office building, with visitors required to check them at the door, where they would be stored in a Faraday cage.
Following the launch event, Elon Musk inundated his X profile with memes and posts criticizing OpenAI’s chatbot as spyware. He argued that Apple’s reliance on OpenAI for AI development jeopardizes user privacy, emphasizing OpenAI’s history of using private data to train their chatbots under the guise of personalization.
Elon Musk’s reaction also hinted at the possibility of a Grok phone in response to OpenAI’s collaboration with Apple. Grok is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, an initiative spearheaded by Musk. Elon Musk suggested that if Apple persists with integrating OpenAI’s technology, the Grok phone could become a reality, emphasizing the necessity for an alternative device. He asserted that the Grok phone is inevitable, hinting at its imminent development and potential release in the market.
