In a recent announcement, Elon Musk revealed that new users on the social platform X may face charges for posting content. Responding to a user’s query, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX cited the need to combat the influx of bots as the primary reason behind this decision.
Musk explained that current AI technology, along with troll farms, can easily bypass standard bot detection measures. Consequently, implementing a nominal fee for new users’ write access is deemed necessary to mitigate this issue.
Moreover, Musk highlighted the problem of fake accounts occupying valuable usernames, emphasizing that paying a small fee is a simpler solution compared to managing namespace availability.
However, Musk clarified that this fee would only apply to new users, who would gain free write access after a three-month period.
This announcement follows a precedent set in October last year, when the platform initiated a $1 annual fee for new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines.
Recently, X embarked on a significant clean-up operation to address the proliferation of spam accounts. This move resulted in the removal of several bots, causing some users to experience a decline in followers.
Despite these efforts, X has not disclosed the exact number of bots currently present on the platform, leaving users curious about the extent of the issue.
