Amidst the political controversy involving Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut and Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a firm stance, urging the Election Commission to take stringent action against the latter Congress leader.
In a detailed letter addressed to Rajeev Kumar, the Election Commissioner of India, the NCW has demanded immediate and decisive action against Supriya Shrinate, Chairperson for Congress’s Social Media & Digital Platforms, as well as against Congress’s State Joint Co-Ordinator, H.S. Ahir. Both Shrinate and Ahir have faced severe reprimand for making lewd and derogatory remarks against Kangana Ranaut, a prominent Bollywood actor and BJP’s candidate from Mandi.
The NCW expressed deep dismay at the disgraceful conduct exhibited by Shrinate and Ahir, emphasizing that such behavior is intolerable and fundamentally undermines the dignity of women. In a statement, the NCW spokesperson Sharmarekha underscored the urgency of the matter, calling for immediate and strict action against the offenders. The commission’s unequivocal stance highlights its commitment to upholding respect and dignity for all women.
“National Commission for Women is appalled by the disgraceful conduct of Ms. Supriya Shrinate and Mr. H.S.Ahir, who made lewd and derogatory remarks about @KanganaTeam on social media. Such behavior is intolerable and goes against the dignity of women. @sharmarekha has sent a letter to the Election Commissioner of India demanding an immediate and strict action against them. Let’s uphold respect and dignity for all women,” the NCW in a statement said.
The Controversy
The controversy erupted following a post shared on Supriya Shrinate’s Instagram handle featuring Kangana Ranaut’s picture. However, what fueled the controversy was the objectionable caption accompanying the post, which took a veiled swipe at Ranaut over her candidature for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Further exacerbating the situation, Congress’s State Joint Co-Ordinator, H.S. Ahir, made highly objectionable and lewd remarks against the acclaimed actor, further intensifying the controversy and drawing widespread condemnation.
Ranaut’s Response
Responding to the controversy, Kangana Ranaut took to social media to assert her stance, urging society to transcend prejudices and refrain from demeaning women based on their profession or circumstances. She also criticized the sexualization of a small town’s name in reference to her candidacy, calling out Congress for displaying sexist tendencies.
“In the last 20 years of my career as an artist I have played all kinds of women. From a naive girl in Queen to a seductive spy in Dhaakad, from a goddess in Manikarnika to a demon in Chandramukhi, from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalaivii. Wee must free our daughters from the shackles of prejudices, we must rise above the curiosity about their body parts and above all we must refrain from using sex workers challenging lives or circumstances as some kind of abuse or slur…every women deserves her dignity,” she said.
Additionally on Ahir’s remark, in her post, Kangana added, “If a young man gets ticket his ideology is attacked if a young woman gets ticket her sexuality is attacked. Strange !! Also congress people are sexualising a small town’s name. Mandi is being used in sexual context every where, just because it has a young woman candidate, shame on congress people for displaying sexist tendencies.
Supriya Shrinate’s clarification
In the midst of the escalating controversy, Supriya Shrinate clarified her position, asserting that the objectionable post was not made by her but was posted by someone with unauthorized access to her social media accounts. In a video statement, she reiterated her commitment to maintaining respectful discourse and pledged to identify the individual responsible for the offensive post.
In a video statement released, she said, “Many people have access to my Facebook and Instagram accounts. One of these people had posted a very disgusting and objectionable post today. As soon as I came to know about this, I removed that post. Anyone who knows me knows very well that I don’t make personal remarks about any woman. It has come to my knowledge that this post was earlier running on a parody account (@Supriyaparody). Someone picked up this post from here and posted it on my account. I am trying to identify the person who did this. Also, the parody account created by misusing my name has also been reported in X.
