The counting of votes for the high-stakes Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections began at 8 a.m., capturing national attention as the BJP-led NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc engage in intense contests. Both elections are being closely watched for their potential to reshape political dynamics ahead of critical parliamentary sessions and the general elections of 2029.
In Maharashtra, where 288 assembly seats are at stake, the ruling Mahayuti alliance led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is locked in a fierce battle against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), is vying to retain power. On the other side, the MVA, consisting of the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), seeks to regain control of the state. Exit polls largely predicted a strong victory for the Mahayuti alliance, which has campaigned on its welfare policies and the “double-engine” government narrative.
This election marks the first major political test since the Shiv Sena and NCP splintered into rival factions, with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar aligning with the BJP. The outcome is expected to have significant implications for the balance of power in Maharashtra, a state that plays a crucial role in national politics.
Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, where 81 seats are up for grabs, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led INDIA bloc is seeking to retain power. The alliance includes the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Their primary challenger is the BJP-led NDA, which is campaigning aggressively to wrest control of the state. Exit polls have delivered mixed predictions, with some favoring a slim edge for the NDA and others forecasting a hung assembly. The INDIA bloc’s campaign focused on tribal welfare and developmental promises, while the BJP emphasized alleged governance lapses and immigration concerns under the current administration.
In addition to these key battles, bypoll results in 15 assembly constituencies across Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, and Uttarakhand are also being declared today. These bypolls, though smaller in scale, are being closely monitored for signs of voter sentiment and regional political shifts.
As counting progresses, early trends indicate that the INDIA bloc has taken a lead in Jharkhand, while the NDA edges closer to victory in Maharashtra. The final outcomes will not only determine the immediate future of these states but also set the tone for the political landscape leading up to 2029.
