Parts of eastern India, including Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, are currently experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures rising significantly above the seasonal average. Kalaikunda in West Bengal reported the highest temperature anomaly, reaching a scorching 47.2 degrees Celsius, which is 10.4 degrees above the normal range.
In West Bengal, the capital city of Kolkata, along with Dum Dum and Uluberia, has recorded temperatures around 43 degrees Celsius. The heatwave’s intensity continues as Jharkhand’s Bahragora nears maximums of 47.1 degrees Celsius, putting immense strain on local populations and infrastructure.
Similarly, Odisha is facing harsh temperatures with Baripada and Balasore hitting 46.4 and 46.0 degrees Celsius respectively. Bihar and Telangana are not spared either, with Forbesganj and Ramgundam enduring highs of 41.2 and 44.4 degrees Celsius.
This extreme weather is most pronounced in Gangetic West Bengal but has also affected isolated regions in the Konkan area. The persistent high temperatures have raised concerns about health risks and the need for urgent measures to provide relief to the affected populations.
